High Court Advocate process


To practice law as an advocate in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court-
Basic conditions

  • 1. Enrollment as an Advocate (Regular Advocate Enrollment) in any Bar Association through Bar Council Examination.
  • 2. Should possess any one of the following qualifications :-
  • A. Must have practiced at least 2 years in any lower court of Bangladesh; or,
  • B. Bachelor’s Degree in Law and has practiced as an advocate in any court abroad in the manner prescribed in the Official Gazette of the Government; or,
  • C. Called as a Barrister at the Bar of United Kingdom or 2nd class (50%mark) in LL.M from a recognized University and at least 2 years in the Chambers .
  • D. Served at least ten years as a judicial officer. Such officers are not required to appear in the written test.


Conditions for the second stage:


1. An advocate who fulfills the above conditions shall apply to the High Court Division for permission to practice law in the prescribed manner. The application form should be submitted to the Bar Council and the application form should contain the following attachments:

  • A. A certificate from the relevant Bar Association to the effect that the advocate is a regular member of its Bar Association and has practiced law for 2 years, OR, a certificate from the Bar of the United Kingdom called as a Barrister, OR an upper second division in LL.M from a recognized University. did And
  • B. Served at least two years in the chambers of a senior advocate of the court; And
  • C. A list of 25 such cases, civil or criminal or both, in which the advocate has appeared in the concerned court; And
  • D. Receipt or bank draft for payment of High Court approval fee of Tk.5,000; And
  • E. 1 copy of passport size photograph of the said advocate.
  • 2. Every applicant must appear and pass the written and oral examination as per Bangladesh Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Rules, 1972 (65(2)).
